POSITION: R&D Lab Technician

The R&D Lab Technician will perform a variety of tasks that support mixing process and mechanical testing, including testing that supports new Product Development. The technician must be able to take instructions in written form and create the test set ups using existing facilities and equipment. In some cases, the technician will be asked to formulate a plan to create a new test set up, which includes developing a list of materials required to execute the test set up. In many cases, the technician will be asked to run the test and log data using existing computerized data acquisition software and supply a written report. Most testing will also include using lab testing equipment. Strong interpersonal communications skills are a must as the incumbent must successfully work and interact with internal and external groups. The ability to perform machining of metal parts and welding of metal parts is strongly desired.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: (Other duties may be assigned)
Preparing test set ups (including tank, tank internals, shaft and mixing impellers) from both written and verbal instructions.
Work with sales force to coordinate the shipping of material back and forth between the client and the lab as needed.
Run equipment and log data using existing data acquisition software.
Performs basic calculations using Microsoft Excel.
Takes samples from mixing vessels and performs testing on samples using a variety of lab equipment (e.g. Viscometer, Moisture Analyzer, Particle Size Distribution Analyzer).
Organizes data collected during testing and provides written report(s) using Microsoft Word and/or Microsoft PowerPoint.
Assembles and disassembles rotating equipment, such as gearboxes and mechanical seals, for inspection before and after testing of equipment.
Tests rotating equipment, including but not limited to measuring temperatures and sound decibel levels produced by equipment.
Maintain the lab's inventory of consumables, which includes ordering material through purchasing.
Acts as a liaison between Sales and Marketing on supporting trade show displays. This includes cleaning and repairing displays and ordering items that may be needed to repair said displays. Perform basic machining of plastic and metal parts in support of maintaining displays.
General housekeeping of lab facilities, which includes routing cleaning of lab equipment and test areas.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
Minimum of a two-year technical degree and 2 years working in a production facility environment, including machine shop experience is required.
In the English language, has the ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence using Microsoft Office products. Ability to verbally communicate with clients that attend testing.
Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, area, circumference and volume. Competent in the conversion of units of measurement. Able to apply concepts of geometry.
Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.

The work environment is that of a machine shop. Occasional exposure to noise levels requiring the use of hearing protection devices is expected. The use of safety shoes and safety glasses is mandatory for many tasks. Occasional additional protective clothing must be worn to avoid chemical exposure (face mask, gloves, laboratory suit).
