Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, is seeking a Nurse Clinician (Clinic Treatment), for the Nursing Department at the Rutgers Cancer Institute of New Jersey.

The primary purpose of the Nurse Clinician (Treatment) position is to provide direct care to a specified group of adult (18-64 years) and geriatric (age 65+ years) patients in the ambulatory setting. The Nurse Clinician works collaboratively with all members of the health care team to ensure patients receive efficient, safe and high quality care. The scope of the position is defined by the Nurse Practice Act of the State of New Jersey and the standard Operating Procedures set forth by the Cancer Institute of New Jersey.

Among the key duties of this position are the following:

* Performs through assessment on assigned patients; identifies actual and potential problems specific to cancer population and notifies physician and patient of study results.
* Collaborates with Physicians, Advanced Practice Nurses, Research Nurse Clinicians, Social Workers and other health team members to determine appropriate clinical management strategies.
* Meets patient care needs, provides assistance to other team members and responds to changing needs of the environment.
* Performs all checks and balances prior to the administration of therapy as per policy to ensure safe patient care. Adheres to all protocol requirements and keeps abreast of all new therapies and technology in the treatment of oncology patients (e.g. syringe pumps, infusion pumps, and hepatic pump).
* Monitors/evaluates toxicities secondary to therapy delivered. Anticipates problems that might arise in frequently occurring clinical situations. Proactively manages, coordinates and delivers high-quality, compassionate oncology nursing care.
* Anticipates complications of antineoplastic therapy especially complications that patients may experience during or shortly after administration of therapy (extravasation, flare reactions) and takes action to prevent or minimize the complications.
* Administers chemotherapy, biological, investigational agents, blood/blood products and supportive care therapies to adult clients older than 18 years of age.
* Provides patient education to individuals and family members. Identifies patient readiness to learn, then formulates and implements individualized teaching plans and documents outcome.
* Supports the research mission by collaborating with Research Nurse Clinicians in protocol implementation and patient monitoring.
* Assists in the coordination of patient care services from the ambulatory to in-patient setting by communicating with hospital nursing staff as needed. Also provides patient and family counseling and reassurance in regard to psychological and/or psychosocial issues.
* Demonstrates an oncology specific knowledge base with particular expertise in the nursing management of physical and psychosocial problems that occur in this population.
* Maintains continuing education with an oncology specific focus. Records activities in yearly performance evaluation. Applies pertinent research findings to clinical practice.
* Maintains accountability for effective time management. Adjust hours of work to meet job demands. Demonstrates a spirt of cooperation and flexibility with team members and implements goals/recommendations made for improving performance of behavior. Provides training, orientation and preceptorship to other faculty and staff as needed and maintains current professional licensure and required membership/certifications.
