Our client is a leading biopharmaceutical company. They have asked us to assist them in their search for a Director of Medical Affairs .

Major tasks and responsibilities will include:

  • Oversees the rapid build-out of the field medical affairs team supporting compounds pre and post launch activities.
  • Manages the recruitment, hiring and onboarding of high performing and motivated Medical Science Liaisons (MSLs).
  • Develops training materials for MSLs and establishes information technology systems and other field medical affairs infrastructure.
  • Develops, evaluates and delivers core training to the MSL team with a focus on product launch readiness; accountable for the quality and consistency of scientific and medical knowledge of the MSLs.
  • Partners in the development of the medical education strategy and tactics and defines the strategic direction and execution of the MSL team.
  • Plans and manages the functional therapeutic area budget comprising of travel and living expenses, compensation and other field medical affairs program budget items.
  • Leads strategy and development of processes and capabilities that optimize the delivery of medical and scientific services to internal stakeholders and external customers.
  • Educates internal team members on disease state paradigm changes, competitive intelligence, and key opinion leader views and opinions as it pertains to the products.
  • Accountable for the effective/optimal integration of the MSL team within the Company.
  • Effectively and quickly develops successful relationships and partners with Cross-Functional Business Unit team members.
  • Ensures internal stakeholders are knowledgeable of disease state paradigm changes, competitive intelligence and key opinion leader views and opinions as it pertains to the various products in the class.
  • Ensures appropriate Field Medical Affairs resources of initiatives such as consultants meetings, advisory board meetings, medical conventions, regional/national societies, etc.
  • Works closely with the National Sales and Marketing Directors to ensure optimal alignment of field resources to deliver therapeutic area goals and objectives, and successful product launches.
  • Accountable for Field Medical Affairs segment of Brand Planning Process to align and prioritize the scientific field-based MSLs.
  • Ensures the development and execution of the Medical Affairs Brand Operational plans.
  • Maintains clinical, scientific, and technical expertise in malignant hematology, oncology and immunology.
  • Gathers clinical and scientific insight regarding in-line products and future products through the review of scientific journals and the attendance at scientific, technical, and regulatory meetings.
  • Presents regular updates to applicable cross-functional partners and therapeutic business reviews at Field Medical Affairs Internal Management Team Meetings as requested.
  • Leads working with cross-functional team members to develop effective brand clinical strategies.
  • We seek candidates with the following qualifications:

  • An advanced degree (MD PhD, PharmD) in science-related field is preferred.
  • Must have a minimum of 7 years of experience in the pharmaceutical industry in medical affairs or clinical development.
  • Must have 5 years of management experience in medical affairs, clinical development or equivalent.
  • Requires a strong knowledge of clinical development operations; including experience in Good Clinical Practice (GCP) and Clinical Development Standard Operation Procedure.
  • Malignant Hematology, Oncology and/or Immunotherapy experience is required.
  • Must have a working knowledge of PhRMA, OIG and other guidelines to ensure compliant medical affairs activities.
  • Must be a team player with strong negotiation, problem-solving and strategic influencing skills.
  • Requires the ability to effectively articulate highly technical/complex scientific data and concepts to audiences with differing scientific and technical knowledge.
  • Must have proven ability to perform successfully under stringent timelines and with changing and competing priorities.
